Life
Katie Smith has risen to prominence on the strongwoman scene over the last two seasons and has emerged as one of the country’s top athletes. She has secured podium finishes in many of the top domestic contests, such as Britain’s Strongest Woman and produced a bronze medal performance at the 2023 European Championships.
Based in York, she has been training for six years and is engaged to former World’s Strongest Man competitor, Robert Frampton. A mother of three sons, Katie fits her training around work and family, and has to be quite flexible with her schedule. When not in the gym she works as a strength coach and level 3 sports massage therapist.
Smith’s future goals include achieving a podium place at World’s Strongest Woman and to get to compete at Hercules Hold in a women’s competition one day. She wants to break a world record, eventually, and loves grip training.
Career
Katie began her strength training journey after having her third son. She joined a gym which held strongwoman sessions and was lucky enough to try some events which she loved. She planned to enter a novice competition a few months later, which she won. After that she was hooked.
2022 was the year that Smith began to make a sizeable impression in the Open Division rankings with a trio of runner-up finishes. She was 2nd to Lucy Underdown at both the Arnold UK Pro contest and England’s Strongest Woman. At Britain’s Strongest Woman Underdown got the better of her once again, but Katie was able to hold off Naomi Hadley, as she had done at the Arnold to claim silver.
In 2023 Katie’s season kicked off with a 3rd place finish at UK’s Strongest Woman which was won by Wales’s Rebecca Roberts, with Underdown taking 2nd. Having qualified for the Official Strongman European Championships, Katie was once again able to produce a very consistent performance to place 3rd, with Underdown getting the better of Roberts this time around.
