We’re honoured to be able to announce plans to remember two-times World’s Strongest Man Geoff Capes at the Official Strongman World Tour, the qualifiers for the global competition, in 2025.
The winner of this year’s first event on the Giants Live tour, Britain’s Strongest Man, will now take home The Geoff Capes Memorial Trophy in tribute to the man who was himself the first-ever winner of the title.
Geoff died in October at the age of 75 and, as well as renaming the trophy being competed for across the five events by the leading strength athletes of today, there will be further tributes paid to the ultimate strength legend, 46 years on from his victory in the competition.
His wife Kashmiro and daughter Emma will join the thousands of fans at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena on Saturday, 1 February, to watch the 12 competitors and they will also come together to pay tribute to Geoff and share memories of how he inspired their strongman journey.
Geoff’s success came after Olympic appearances in 1972 and 1976 catapulted him onto the global stage. He went onto to be crowned the World’s Strongest Man in both 1983 and 1985, watched on by over ten million UK television viewers.
“Millions across the UK and many more around the world watched Geoff Capes compete – and win – on the biggest stages at the Olympics and at the World’s Strongest Man finals, and we wanted to recognise the huge impact he had on strength sports in this country at our first event of the year. 40 years on from the last time he won the title, it’s more than fitting that the world’s strongest men of today will compete for a trophy in memory and in honour of one of the world’s most famous ever names in strength sport.”
“We all miss Geoff so much but have gained great strength as a family by the kind words and tributes from those within the strongman community, and beyond, since his death. Having the winner of the Britain’s Strongest Man title, something Geoff was so proud to win nearly half a century ago, lift The Geoff Capes Memorial Trophy is a beautiful and fitting tribute and we look forward to being in Sheffield in February to see who will take it home.”
