We had a great two day event at the MTV Expo Centre on Saturday and Sunday in Joburg, South Africa at the MTN Expo Centre. The Strongman event was the main attraction of the Rand Show with over 25,000 fans taking in the festival each day. When the athletes arrives they took in a Lion  Park before the serious action started on Day One  - the main World Strongest Man Qualification day. The order of finishing for Day One was as follows:

  • 1st Brian Shaw - USA (63.5)
  • 2nd Misha Koklyaev - Russia (57)
  • 3rd Terry Hollands - UK (54.5)

Top three qualify for WSM

  • 4th Stefan Solvi Petersson - Iceland (49.5)
  • 5th Mark Felix - UK (48.5)
  • 6th Etiene Smith - SA (40.5)
  • 7th Franki Scheun - SA (38.5)
  • 8th Constantian Ilin - Ukraine (36.5)
  • 9th Richard Skog - Norway (30)
  • 10th Gerrit Van Staden - SA (29)
  • 11th Andre Sweeney - SA (11.5)
  • 12th Vuyani Mseswa - SA (9)
On Day One, Koklyaev took the All African Log for Maximum Record to 190kg. Previously Etiene Smith had owned it at 185kg.

On Day Two Misha one of the greatest strength feats in history. He threw a 5.81m with a 25kg Weight for height. This beats his old World Record of 19feet (5.80m) by 1 cm. What made it so impressive is there was no link to the weight. It was a solid implement - just 12 inches in length. If and when he gets on a proper 56lbs weight for Height at London Richmond Highland Games strength challenge on June 6th I am sure we will see that World Record get smashed out of sight.

Brian Shaw was in great form as the Champion. He has recovered well from illness earlier in the year. He won three out of the six events. Winning Keg Toss, Africa Stone Carry and the Atlas Stones. Koklyaev was also tremendous in the deadlift scoring 12 reps in 60 seconds with 340kg. Etiene Smith had a moment of brilliance in front of the home crowd winning the farmers walk (160kg each hand for 50m) in a time of 26.15 seconds. Terry Hollands, weighing in at 190 kg, took the third automatic qualifying spot in Joburg. His overall high level never saw him drop out the top 5 in all disciplines and gave him a third place overall finish.

Some veteran faces helped put the show on including MC Gerrit Badenhorst (2nd at WSM 96), MC Garth Collins (Gladiator Granite), Claude Parnell (SA WSM competitor) who was chief scorer and of course the ubiquitous Giants Live Referee team of Svend Karlsen and Gregor Edmunds who helped make the show a big success.

The next 'Giants Live:WSM Qualifier' will be Kiev Ukraine on May 28th. Also confirmed is Poland on August 8th.

Attached is Misha's WR throw pic. And a pic of a rather scared Svend Karlsen as a large Lion jumped there truck at the Lion Park!!
